Soyut Makine Kavramı ile Dijital Algoritmaları Anlamak: Yapay Zekâ Dil Modeli Üzerine Bir Eleştirel Söylem Çalışması

In an age where information production has become widespread at the global level and the activities of computers and software have dominated both material and cultural production processes, the word “algorithm” is a term we frequently encounter. This concept is mainly discussed using the technicalized terminology of the positive sciences, yet given its strong economic, cultural, and social context, it should also be discussed within the field of the social sciences. This study discusses the theoretical framework of the concept of algorithm by associating it with both Foucault’s concept of diagram and Deleuze and Guattari’s concept of abstract machine; it also conducts a critical discourse analysis of questions it poses in the research phase to the artificial intelligence language model ChatGPT-4. Foucault described the panopticon as a diagram and showed that this model can be adapted to other institutions. Deleuze, in turn, established a relationship between the concept of abstract machine and the diagram. What is important here is that abstract machines operating on concrete devices support and reproduce certain intellectual, ideological, perceptual, and behavioral acts. The research problem derived from this context concerns the type of discourse that is produced by ChatGPT-4, one of today’s algorithm-driven artificial intelligence software applications, and the political context in which this discourse takes place. In alignment with the research problem, the researchers posed questions to the ChatGPT-4 language model. Based on the model’s responses, a selection of suggested questions were considered and a total of twenty questions were analyzed. Care was taken to ensure that the questions were not leading, and the research was terminated in cases where the answers became repetitive. Following the analysis, it was determined that the language model reproduces discourses consistent with neoliberal ideologies discussed in the literature.

Enformasyon üretiminin yerküre düzeyinde yaygınlaştığı, bilgisayar ve yazılımların etkinliklerinin hem maddi hem de kültürel üretim süreçlerinde egemenlik kurduğu bir dönemde algoritma sözcüğü de sıklıkla karşımıza çıkan terimlerden biridir. Buna karşın, bu kavram ağırlıklı olarak pozitif bilimlerin sahiplendiği teknikleştirilmiş bir terminoloji içerisinden ele alınmaktadır. Aynı zamanda güçlü bir ekonomik, kültürel ve toplumsal bağlama da sahip olduğu için bu kavram söz konusu terminolojinin yanında sosyal bilimler alanı içinde de tartışılmalıdır. Bu çalışma, kuramsal çerçevesinde algoritma kavramını hem Foucault’nun diyagram hem de Deleuze ve Guattari’nin soyut makine kavramları ile ilişkilendirerek tartışma, araştırma aşamasında ise ChatGPT-4 adlı yapay zekâ dil modeline sorulan sorular üzerinden eleştirel söylem çalışması gerçekleştirme amacındadır. Foucault panoptik cezaevi makinesini bir diyagram olarak tanımlamış ve bu modelin diğer kurumlara uyarlanabileceğini göstermişti. Deleuze ise soyut makine kavramı ile diyagram arasında bir ilişki kurmuştu. Burada önemli olan somut düzenekler üzerinde işleyen soyut makinelerin belli düşünsel, ideolojik, algısal ve davranışsal edimleri destekleyip yeniden üretmesidir. Bu bağlamdan türeyen araştırma problemi de algoritmalar tarafından yönlendirilen günümüz yapay zekâ yazılımlarından biri olan ChatGPT-4 adlı dil modelinin hangi söylemi ürettiği ve bu söylemin hangi politik bağlamda yer aldığı şeklindedir. Araştırma problemi doğrultusunda ChatGPT-4 dil modeline sorular sorulmuş, modelin sorudan hareketle öneride bulunduğu soruların bir kısmı dikkate alınmış ve toplam 20 adet soru çözümlenmiştir. Soruların yönlendirici olmamasına dikkat edilmiş ve cevaplarda tekrara düşüldüğü anlaşılınca araştırma sonlandırılmıştır. Çözümlemenin ardından dil modelinin literatürde neoliberalizm ile ilişkilendirilen söylemleri yeniden ürettiği bulgulanmıştır.
