Kate Crawford’ın “Yapay Zekâ Atlası” Üzerine Bir Değerlendirme

This review examines Kate Crawford’s book Atlas of AI: Power, Politics, and the Planetary Costs of Artificial Intelligence. Artificial intelligence is often presented as a technology whose objectivity and decision-making capacity transcends the abilities of human beings. Crawford, however, argues that it is wrong to consider AI technology as a purely technical phenomenon independent of its material structure and the ideologies of its creators. Drawing on her personal experience, Crawford constructs this atlas to take us on a spatial and historical journey to better understand the inequalities, exploitation, and environmental degradation behind technological advancement, concluding with a discussion of alternative paths that technology could take. This review explores the fundamental themes addressed in Crawford’s work and emphasizes the importance of evaluating AI technology within its broader social, political, and environmental contexts. Additionally, the conclusion will discuss the significance of the book’s translation into Turkish.

Bu değerlendirme yazısında Kate Crawford’ın Atlas of AI: Power, Politics, and the Planetary Costs of Artificial Intelligence başlıklı kitabı incelenecektir. Yapay zekâ, sıklıkla tarafsız ve daha iyi karar alabilme becerisiyle insanı aşan bir teknoloji olarak sunulmaktadır. Crawford ise yapay zekâ teknolojisinin materyal yapısından ve onu inşa edenlerin ideolojilerinden bağımsız, salt teknik bir fenomen olarak ele alınmasının hatalı olduğunu savunuyor. Yazar, kişisel deneyimlerinden ve öznel bakış açısından yola çıkarak kurduğu bu atlas ile bizi günümüzün teknolojik ilerlemesinin ardındaki eşitsizlikleri, sömürü süreçlerini ve çevresel tahribatları daha iyi anlamamızı sağlayacak mekânsal ve tarihsel bir yolculuğa çıkarıyor ve son olarak teknolojinin gidebileceği alternatif yollardan bahsediyor. Bu değerlendirme yazısında, Crawford’ın eserinde ele alınan temel temalar incelenmekte ve yapay zekâ teknolojisinin daha geniş toplumsal, politik ve çevresel bağlamlarda değerlendirilmesinin önemi vurgulanmaktadır. Kitabın Türkçeye çevrilmesinin bu bağlamda ne kadar önemli olduğu da sonuç kısmında ele alınmıştır.
