The First World War and “Turkey’s Armed Neutrality” in the Newspaper Az Est

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the representation of the Ottoman Empire in the Hungarian newspaper Az Est at the beginning of the WW1. Treating newspaper stories as a significant historical source while acknowledging that they may misrepresent events, this article is interested in news “in the shadow of the war” rather than news directly about the armed conflict, and it thus focuses not on the news from the front lines but rather on the war’s reflections in daily life. Eighty news articles were selected between the dates of the assassination of the Austro-Hungarian heir and the stabilization of the parties and the war fronts (28 June– 1 December 1914). These were then subjected to descriptive-qualitative analysis. This analysis revealed that the allied Ottoman state was often portrayed positively in the news, and that the news reflected the war’s echoes in Istanbul, from the Ottoman Porte to the streets of the city. This study argues that these reflections of the war in the media played a key role in representing events and shaping public opinion and in not only reflecting but also influencing international politics. It further argues that newspaper analyses like this one can make significant contributions to the scholarship on the WW1, Turkish history, Turkish– Hungarian relations, and Central European and Hungarian media history.
